Fascination of Science Exhibit at the Koch Institute

In Fascination of Science, Herlinde Koelbl produced photographic portraits of scientific researchers evocative of their deeply personal motivations, influences, and ways of thinking. While each portrait is expressive of this intimate dialogue between artist and subject, the broad sweep of disciplines, backgrounds, and origins she explores reveals the interconnectedness of the scientific endeavor across institutions, geography, and subject matter. Her community of scientists includes six MIT researchers and echoes the mission of MIT “to advance knowledge and educate students in science, technology, and other areas of scholarship that will best serve the nation and the world in the 21st century.”

The exhibit is now on display in the east wing of the Koch Institute gallery until the end of the year with kind sponsorship from the Consulate General of Germany in Boston and the MIT Museum.

Deadline is approaching!

Are you a postdoctoral researcher looking for professional development opportunities and to further your research career? Deadline to apply for the Koch Institute Convergence Scholars Program is October 17th.

In the News

Join us in celebrating National Nanotechnology Day!

National Nanotechnology Day is an annual event featuring community-led events and activities on or around October 9 to help raise awareness of nanotechnology, how it is currently used in products that enrich our daily lives, and the challenges and opportunities it holds for the future. This date, 10/9, pays homage to the nanometer scale. This year, the Marble Center for Cancer Nanomedicine is participating in the Cambridge Science Festival with a booth on Cancer-fighting Super Heroes where anyone can craft superhero costumes inspired from our research at the Koch Institute while tapping into their superpowers to fight cancer.

The Marble Center launches a new grant on Global Oncology

The goal of the Marble Center for Cancer Nanomedicine’s Global Oncology Nano (GO Nano) Request for Proposal (RFP) is to support MIT investigators in advancing innovative ideas to solve global oncology challenges and support underserved cancer patients around the world. Research funded by the GO Nano RFP will leverage advances in miniaturized technologies to collaboratively address disparities and differences in cancer prevention, early detection, and care, while ensuring affordability and impact in low-resource settings. (For MIT-affiliated groups access to the grant webpage, please contact tfadel@mit.edu).

U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) NanoDay Symposium 2022

This virtual symposium will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2022. It will address drug development of products that contain nanomaterials in their formulation and how the newly finalized guidance to industry for products that contain nanomaterials can be implemented in filings to the FDA. Learn more…

Elicio Therapeutics Receives $2.8 Million Grant from the Gastro-Intestinal Research Foundation (GIRF)

Elicio Therapeutics, a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing a pipeline of novel immunotherapies for the treatment of cancer and other diseases, today announced that it has been awarded a $2.8 million grant from the Gastro-Intestinal Research Foundation (GIRF) in Chicago to fund research for two therapeutic cancer vaccines. Both vaccines have been designed with Elicio’s proprietary lymph node-targeting Amphiphile (AMP) platform that “educates” T cells on how to target particular antigens, such as mutated proteins in cancer. ELI-007 is being developed to target the BRAF gene mutation, and ELI-008 is being developed to target hotspot mutations in p53 in solid tumors including colorectal cancer, melanoma and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). BRAF V600E mutations are present in 40% of melanoma, 10% of colon cancer and 2% of lung cancer while mutations in p53 are found in approximately 60% of patients with solid tumors. Read more…
